About us

Journeys led by the people who host them

We believe the best way to understand a culture is through the people who live it every day, not through a stage set up for tourists.

Mission

Opening doors, not putting traditions on display

EtnoJourney connects travellers with customary and village communities across Indonesia. Every journey is designed together with local hosts: they decide what can be shared, when, and how.

We deliberately keep journeys small and slow. The goal is not to collect as many places as possible, but to make time to sit, listen and learn from your hosts.

Three paths

Three ways to travel with Etno Journey

Etno Journey follows three paths: ancestral traditions, inner journeys and the living earth. Each is a way of travelling slowly, alongside the people who keep these places alive.

Not every experience below is a bookable tour yet. These are experiences we develop with our partner communities; where a tour already exists, we link to it.

How we work

Four principles we don't compromise on

  1. 01

    A fair share

Guides and host families are paid directly for their time and expertise, and part of every booking goes to village needs that the community decides for itself.

  2. 02

    Small groups

Every tour has a participant limit. Small groups mean more honest conversations and a lighter footprint on the village.

  3. 03

    Consent for every ceremony

Ceremonies belong to the community. Guests only attend when hosts allow it, and we follow their rules on dress, photography and boundaries that must not be crossed.

  4. 04

    No staged performances

We never hold rituals just for guests. What you meet is everyday life: kitchens, fields, workshops and ceremonies that are genuinely taking place.

Responsible travel

What we ask of every guest

  • Dress modestly and follow your hosts' guidance, especially at temples, customary houses and ceremonies.

  • Ask before photographing people, and accept a no gracefully.

  • Take your rubbish home and use water sparingly, especially in villages where it is scarce.

  • Buy crafts directly from their makers and respect the prices they set.

Village partners

How we choose and support our partners

We work with villages whose residents themselves want to welcome guests. Before a journey opens, we agree with elders and village managers on group sizes, schedules that don't interfere with customary activities, and how income is shared.

Partnerships are reviewed regularly. If a village needs a pause, for example during a major ceremony season or the harvest, we put journeys on hold.
