About Kapuas Hulu & Sintang

In the interior of West Kalimantan, a number of Dayak communities still live in rumah betang, longhouses on stilts where many families live side by side in rooms that open onto one long gallery. The longhouse is where kinship, tradition and a love of the forest are kept alive. In Sintang, the Ensaid Panjang longhouse is known as a centre of Dayak Desa ikat weaving, done by women on gedogan backstrap looms. Further upstream in Kapuas Hulu, the Iban of Sungai Utik live in a longhouse more than two hundred metres long, built in 1973, and look after the customary forest that sustains them.

Getting there

Fly to Pontianak, then take a limited connecting flight to Tebelian Airport in Sintang or Pangsuma Airport in Putussibau. Overland from Pontianak is long: about 8–10 hours to Sintang and more to Putussibau.
