About Celuk & Mas

Silverwork in Celuk began as small family workshops serving the royal houses around Sukawati, Peliatan and Ubud. From the mid-1970s many farming families turned to the craft, and most jewellery is still made by hand, including granulation, in which tiny silver beads are fused into patterns. A few kilometres north, Mas is known as one of the woodcarving centres around Ubud. Carving was once made mainly for temples and palaces; the arrival of foreign artists in the 1920s and 1930s helped shape the sculpture known today. Mas masks take days to weeks to finish, using dozens of different chisels. Mas is also home to the Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets, a museum holding thousands of masks and puppets from across Indonesia and abroad.
