About Klungkung dan Kamasan

Semarapura, the capital of Klungkung Regency, was once the seat of the Klungkung kingdom. In the Taman Gili complex stands Kerta Gosa, a pavilion built at the end of the 18th century as a court of justice, where cases unresolved elsewhere were decided by Brahmana priests. Its ceilings are covered in Kamasan wayang-style paintings, above all the story of Bhima in heaven and hell, a reminder of karmic law. The paintings have been restored and repainted several times, including in 1918, 1933 and 1963. Nearby, Bale Kambang sits in a moat, its ceilings telling the Sutasoma story. Just outside town, Kamasan village is the home of Bali's classical painting style, which draws its figures from wayang shadow puppets and became the official style of the royal courts. Its painters still depict scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, calendars and folk tales. Klungkung's history also includes the Puputan of 18 April 1908, the royal family's last stand against Dutch forces.
