About this journey
From the Klungkung kingdom's traces in Semarapura to Kusamba beach, where a handful of salt farmers still work the traditional way.
We start in Semarapura, learning about the Klungkung kingdom and the Puputan of 18 April 1908, and seeing the Taman Gili complex. Then we head to the Kusamba coast, a fishing village and a centre of traditional salt making.
Kusamba's salt farmers dry seawater the inherited way, using troughs, and the salt is known for its large grains and savoury taste. The tradition is becoming rare: the number of farmers has fallen sharply in recent decades because of coastal erosion and few young people taking it up. Visits depend on the season and the farmers' willingness, and buying salt directly from them is the most tangible way to support them.
