About this journey

Walk the village axis from temple to family compounds and learn the Tri Mandala concept with a local guide.

Penglipuran is one of the most intact examples of a Balinese customary village layout. We walk from one end of the village towards the kaja (mountain-ward) direction, noticing how compounds with matching angkul-angkul gates line both sides of the path, then pause near the temple to understand how sacred and living spaces are divided. Your guide will also explain awig-awig, the customary rules residents still follow, and show a traditional bamboo-roofed kitchen still used in some homes.

Hosted by the local community in Penglipuran
