Penglipuran is a customary village in Bangli Regency, about five kilometres north of Bangli town. Its layout follows the Tri Mandala concept with a kaja-kelod orientation: the most sacred area faces Mount Agung, family compounds line the middle, and the less sacred zone sits at the far end.
Every compound is entered through a matching angkul-angkul gate, and bamboo is the main material for the roofs and walls of its traditional buildings. The village's bamboo forest covers around 37.7 hectares with 15 bamboo species, and its conservation earned a Kalpataru award in 1995. Awig-awig, the village's customary law, is still observed, including a ban on polygamy.
