About this journey

See the Bale Gajah Tumpang Salu and Bandung Rangki houses, and palm sugar making in Pedawa.

Buleleng's Bali Aga villages keep spatial layouts and a dialect different from lowland Balinese villages. In Sidatapa, residents show us the Bale Gajah Tumpang Salu, a traditional house divided into three zones following the tri mandala concept. In Pedawa we see the Bandung Rangki, a single open room where beds, kitchen and shrine share one building. In the afternoon palm sugar makers explain how they tap the sap and cook it down, knowledge Pedawa is proud of.
