About Munduk & Sidatapa

Munduk is a highland village in Buleleng Regency surrounded by clove and coffee gardens and forest. In colonial times it was a retreat from the heat of Singaraja, and some old buildings still stand. From its ridges you can see Lake Tamblingan and Lake Buyan inside an ancient caldera, with Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan at the water's edge. Further north, five Bali Aga villages, Sidatapa, Cempaga, Tigawasa, Pedawa and Banyuseri, keep customs distinct from lowland Balinese villages. Sidatapa has the Bale Gajah Tumpang Salu house, while Pedawa is known for its single-room Bandung Rangki houses and for palm sugar made with knowledge passed down through generations.

Getting there

About 2.5–3.5 hours by road from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport via Bedugul; Sidatapa and Pedawa sit in the hills of Banjar, Buleleng.
