About Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat means Four Kings, after its four main islands: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool. More than 1,500 small islands lie off the north-western tip of Papua's Bird's Head and form part of the Coral Triangle, the most biodiverse marine region on earth. Its communities live from the sea and protect it through sasi, a customary law that closes fishing grounds for set periods. In villages such as Arborek, residents run homestays, weave hats and noken bags from pandan leaves, and welcome guests with the Yospan dance.

Getting there

Fly into Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong, usually via Jakarta, Makassar, Ambon or Manado. From Sorong the express ferry to Waisai on Waigeo takes about 2 hours and sails a few times a day; villages are reached from Waisai by boat.
