About Samosir

Samosir is the large island in the middle of Lake Toba and the heart of Batak Toba culture. Its customary villages are marked by the rumah bolon, timber houses on stilts with soaring curved roofs and carved gorga facades. In Huta Siallagan, a protected heritage village in Simanindo, stand the Batu Persidangan, the stone seats where elders once held trials. Ulos, the Batak woven cloth draped over the shoulders and given at ceremonies such as weddings, is still woven by hand.
