About Wae Rebo

Wae Rebo lies in West Satar Mese District, Manggarai Regency, Flores, at more than 1,000 metres above sea level. The village is known for its seven mbaru niang, conical houses thatched with palm fibre and lontar leaves, each with five levels: the ground floor for living, upper levels for food, seeds and reserves, and the most sacred top level for offerings to the ancestors. In 2012 its conservation was recognised by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Wae Rebo can only be reached on foot, about 4.5 kilometres from Denge village, and every guest is welcomed with the Waelu'u ritual before exploring. Coffee is the main crop, and women weave songke cloth.

Getting there

Fly to Labuan Bajo or Ruteng, then drive from Ruteng to Denge village (about 2–4 hours, partly on rough roads), followed by a hike of around 3 hours through forest.
