About this journey

Hike up from Denge, be welcomed with the Waelu'u ritual and spend the night in a village of mbaru niang houses.

The journey starts in Ruteng and heads to Denge village, the trailhead for Wae Rebo. The roughly 4.5-kilometre trail climbs through forest and takes about three hours. On arrival, guests are welcomed with the Waelu'u ritual in Niang Gendang, the main house, before exploring. You will spend the night in the village, eat with residents and see how a mbaru niang is used: the ground floor for living and the upper levels for storing the harvest and offerings to the ancestors. In the morning, mist often fills the valley before we walk back down to Denge.

Hosted by the local community in Wae Rebo
