About Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is the only Indonesian province led by a sultan. The Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat anchors Javanese culture: gamelan, wayang puppetry, classical dance and refined etiquette. In the batik villages, the canting-and-wax technique is still handed down; Indonesian batik was inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2009. Northwest of the city, in Magelang, Central Java, Borobudur carries 2,672 relief panels that guide pilgrims up to its summit.

Getting there

Fly into Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) in Kulon Progo, then take the airport train or a car into the city, about an hour. Long-distance trains from Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya stop at Tugu Station. Borobudur is about 1–1.5 hours from the city.
