About this journey

Read Borobudur's reliefs with a village guide, then draw batik with a canting in a Yogyakarta batik village.

Day one begins before dawn in the Menoreh hills, followed by a walk with a local guide to read Borobudur's reliefs, including the Lalitavistara series on the life of Siddhartha. In the afternoon we cycle through the villages around the temple. Day two is spent in a batik village. A batik maker explains classical Javanese motifs such as parang and kawung, then guides you through your own cloth, from pattern and wax drawing with the canting to dyeing.
