About this journey

Stay with a Tengger family, learn about Kasada from the village priest, and greet dawn at Penanjakan.

This two-day journey takes you to a Tengger village on the caldera rim. You stay with a family, warm up by the wood stove, and talk with the dukun pandita about the meaning of the Kasada and Karo ceremonies. Before dawn we head to Penanjakan to watch the sun rise over the sea of sand, then walk to Bromo's crater past Luhur Poten temple. If your dates coincide with Kasada, you will witness the ceremony from a respectful distance.
