About this journey

Stay with a Tengger family in Ngadas: farm the slopes, cook on the wood stove and learn village customs at about 2,100 metres.

Ngadas is one of the Tengger villages, an enclave inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park at about 2,150 metres. Most families farm vegetables on steep slopes, and village customs are still firmly kept. Over three days you join the family in the fields, help with the harvest and learn to cook at the wood stove that keeps the house warm. Nights in Ngadas can drop close to freezing. If your visit coincides with a village observance, your hosts will explain what guests may and may not do.
