About Tengger Bromo

The Tengger people live on the slopes of the Tengger massif and trace their ancestry to Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger. They practise a distinctive form of Hinduism, guided by a dukun pandita (priest) in every village. Each year, in the month of Kasada, villagers climb to Bromo's crater rim to offer the harvest in thanksgiving. Between ceremonies, life revolves around potato and shallot fields on steep slopes, timber houses warmed by wood stoves, and the sarong always draped against the cold.

Getting there

The nearest cities with airports are Malang (Abdulrachman Saleh Airport) and Surabaya (Juanda Airport), both also linked by train to Jakarta and Yogyakarta. From Malang the Tengger villages are about 2–3 hours by mountain road, from Surabaya about 3–4 hours.
