About this journey

Explore the village believed to be the Minangkabau homeland, rumah gadang houses and the Pagaruyung royal palace.

Nagari Pariangan lies on the slopes of Mount Marapi at 500 to 700 metres and is believed to be where the Minangkabau ancestors first settled. With a local guide we walk among rumah gadang houses, terraced rice fields and rangkiang, the rice barns that accompany a rumah gadang. Day two takes us to the Istano Basa Pagaruyung near Batusangkar. The palace burned in 1804, 1966 and 2007 and was rebuilt each time; it is now a museum on the kingdom's history and Minangkabau matrilineal custom.
