Jembrana is Bali's westernmost regency, a land of rice fields and bamboo forest rarely visited by tour groups. Its traditions grew out of farming life. Makepung is a race of buffalo pairs pulling small carts, driven by jockeys in traditional dress on dirt tracks. Races are held regularly between July and November, culminating in the Regent's Cup and the Governor's Cup. Jegog, a gamelan of very large bamboo tubes, developed in Jembrana in the early 20th century and takes its name from its biggest instrument. On the coast, Pengambengan fishing port is Bali's largest centre of small-scale fisheries, where selerek boats set out in pairs to fish the Bali Strait.
