About this journey

Watch makepung buffalo races on an official race day, then learn about Jembrana's farming life.

Makepung grew out of Jembrana's farming culture: a decorated pair of buffalo pulls a small cart, driven by a jockey in traditional dress on a dirt track. Races are held regularly between July and November, culminating in the Regent's Cup and the Governor's Cup. This tour runs only on official race days as announced by the regional government, so bookable dates are limited to that season. On day two we explore rice fields and villages around Negara to understand how buffalo, fields and this tradition fit into farming life.
