About this journey

Watch selerek boats come in at Bali's largest small-scale fishing port, taste local fish dishes, then hear bamboo jegog.

Pengambengan fishing port is Bali's largest centre of small-scale fisheries. Fishers here go out in pairs of selerek boats sailing side by side, one carrying the net and the other the catch. In the morning we watch the catch unloaded and sold along the quay. At midday we taste fish dishes with west Balinese spices. In the afternoon, when a local troupe's schedule allows, we listen to a jegog rehearsal, the giant bamboo gamelan of Jembrana once played to gather villagers for communal work.
