About Sade

Sade is a customary hamlet of the Sasak people in Rembitan village, Pujut District, Central Lombok, and one of the oldest settlements in the area that still keeps its traditional houses. Sasak farmers' houses are called bale tani, with grass-thatched roofs and woven bamboo walls, alongside the curved-roof rice barns (lumbung) that have become a symbol of Lombok. The floors of Sade's houses are periodically coated with buffalo dung mixed with earth, a traditional way to bind and strengthen the floor and keep out dust and insects. Weaving is still part of daily life for Sade's women, and its woven cloth and songket are a source of pride for the hamlet.
