About this journey

Four days during the August festival season: dances, noken and stories from the peoples of the Baliem Valley.

The Baliem Valley Cultural Festival has been held every August in Jayawijaya Regency since 1989 to sustain the cultures of the valley's peoples, including the Hubula, Lani, Yali, Nduga and Walak. It features languages and origin stories, dances from each community, crafts such as noken bags and woodcarving, and a staged traditional battle as its finale. This tour follows the official festival dates announced by the regency each year. Outside festival days we visit noken makers and villages around Wamena. Your guide explains the etiquette for photographing and talking with performers.
