About this journey

Five days on foot from Wamena through sweet-potato gardens, over suspension bridges and into honai villages.

From Wamena we walk the valley with a guide and porters from local villages. The trail passes the sweet-potato gardens that provide the staple food, suspension bridges over the Baliem River and ridges with views of the Jayawijaya Mountains. At night you stay in villages, share the fire inside a honai and learn how families organise their gardens, livestock and community life. Routes and villages depend on the weather and on permission from the communities.

Hosted by the local community in Lembah Baliem
