About this journey

Three days through the nutmeg gardens of Banda Besar, Fort Belgica and the spice history that changed the world.

We start at Fort Belgica, built by the Dutch in 1611 and rebuilt into its pentagonal form in 1672 to 1673, then walk down to Fort Nassau and the old town. Your guide explains the nutmeg trade, the 1621 conquest and the perk system that shaped Banda society today, including the story of Run Island, exchanged for Manhattan. On day two we cross to Banda Besar to walk the nutmeg gardens, see how the fruit is harvested, the mace separated and the seeds dried, then cook nutmeg-spiced dishes with a local family.
