About this journey

Two days: the exile houses of Hatta and Sjahrir, then a climb up Gunung Api to greet dawn over Banda.

On 11 February 1936, Mohammad Hatta and Sutan Sjahrir arrived on Banda Neira as political prisoners of the colonial government. In what are now known as their exile houses, they ran an afternoon school for Banda's children. We visit these houses and the colonial buildings nearby, and talk about what Banda meant on the road to independence. Before dawn the next day we cross to Gunung Api and climb this active volcano, about 650 metres high, to watch the sunrise over the Banda islands. The climb depends on the volcano's activity status and the weather.
