About this journey

Follow the Petanu valley from an 11th-century hermitage to 14th-century rock reliefs, through rice fields and subak.

We start early at Goa Gajah, while the bathing pools are still quiet. Your guide explains how Hindu and Buddhist traces meet at this site, the meaning of the spouting statues and the etiquette for entering temple grounds. From there we walk along rice-field dykes and subak channels to Yeh Pulu, where some 25 metres of reliefs show wayang figures, a hunt and scenes of daily life. The morning ends with a simple lunch at a village warung.
