About this journey

Four days learning about Aluk To Dolo, ceremonial grounds and rock graves with a Torajan guide, without turning grief into a show.

Rambu Solo' is the funeral ceremony of the ancestral Aluk To Dolo teachings, still held by Torajan families today, including those who follow other religions. It can last several days, gathers the whole extended family, and is how the family honours and accompanies the one who has died. This tour does not sell tickets to ceremonies. With a Torajan guide you learn the meaning of the rante (ceremonial grounds with standing stones), liang (rock graves) and tau-tau (memorial effigies), visit the Londa cliff graves, and talk about Ma'nene, the care of ancestors' remains practised by some families in North Toraja. If a family holding a ceremony is willing to receive guests, your guide will ask permission and walk you through the etiquette expected.

Hosted by the local community in Tana Toraja
