About this journey

Three days among tongkonan villages, the Batutumonga terraces and a farming family's arabica garden.

We begin at Kete Kesu, a customary village south-east of Rantepao where tongkonan and rice barns face each other across one courtyard. A local guide explains how a tongkonan is built, who has the right to build one, and how passura' carvings are made in four basic colours. Next we walk the terraces of Batutumonga on the slopes of Mount Sesean and stop at Pasar Bolu, Rantepao's traditional market. On the last day you learn to pick, process and brew arabica coffee with a farming family in the highlands.

Hosted by the local community in Tana Toraja
