About this journey

Walk down the sengked stairs into a Sundanese customary village to learn its house rules, taboos and daily life.

From the Garut–Tasikmalaya road we walk down the stone sengked stairway into the Ciwulan river valley. A guide from Kampung Naga explains the customary rules that shape the village: stilted houses of bamboo and wood, palm-fibre or thatch roofs, facing north or south and left unpainted. You will hear about pamali, the unwritten taboos residents observe, and the Hajat Sasih ceremony. The sacred forest and the Bumi Ageung are not visited, and the guide will tell you where photography is allowed.
